Note to Workshop Participants:
Why Transcript Work right away? Why are we "giving away" the text to the
students at the beginning, instead of making them train their ears by
listening first? I did it this way because the girls don't speak clearly
half of the time, and, to a lesser extent, because the interviewer had a
hard time getting close to those speaking in this group of 3. In other
words, it's just too hard. Usually, this type of video is simply not
used in Real English. It doesn't meet RE's basic requirements of
technical speech clarity. This "long version" of the 3 Irish girls is
not included in the Achieve video, for example; you only find the short
clear version there.
Interviewer: What do you hope to achieve before you die?
Louise: Ooh, that's a real mind-blower. Just want to be happy, get married. Hi guys!
Claire: And she's a very good cook.
Louise: I don't know, just happiness really, that's it.
Interviewer: What do you hope to achieve before you die?
Claire: Oh, I'd love to be happy, content and, but I know I never will be. No, content and happy and rich, famous, uhm, the list is endless.
Interviewer: What would you like to achieve before you die?
Anne: Uhm, I'd like to be fairly ri', well-off. I'd like to be
fairly happy, no money worries, and be fairly happy, content with my life.
