Practical Considerations in the Use of JMix

Obervations for Hot Pot Beginners:

   Exo 9a , Exo 9b and Exo 9c

Exercise 9a is a simple "Jumbled Sentence" exo. The students click on the words to put Alexander's answer in order.

Exercises 9b and 10c are a bit more complicated. The students must click (9b) or Drag and Drop (9c) to put the Question AND the Answer in the correct order.

# 9: Simple JMix default output - Students click (instead of dragging and dropping) to put the answer in order. This seems like a "livelier" way to design as opposed to drag and drop output.

# 9b: Also Simple JMix default output - However, in this exercise, the student have a more extensive choice of words. They must click on the words to find the question AND the answer. I consider this exercise to be a MISTAKE.

# 9c: JMix with Drag and Drop output. This exercise is the same as 9b EXCEPT that the output is "Drag and Drop". Compare 9b and 9c as if you were a learner. When the sentence is long, or if the  student must find both a question and answer, it is much easier for students to manipulate the exercise in Drag and Drop form.

Although this seems obvious, I had to observe real students doing this type of exercise before I realized I had a problem with my design choices. Default output involves clicking on words one at a time to "freeze" them in the correct order. A student can freeze many words in a correct order before realizing that his choices are actually wrong given the words and pronunciation marks remaining, and must completely rebegin. With drag and drop output, on the other hand, he simply rearranges the words without having to rebegin the whole exo.

The other hot potato which has a drag and drop output option is JMatch.
